Meditation Tools
In the simplest of interpretations of its meaning, meditation could be classified as a state of consciousness, which is marked by a posture of stillness and phase of internal peace. The fundamental idea, which becomes the most essential goal of meditation, is the attainment of supreme and absolute spiritual serenity. It basically transforms you to a world of a much deeper nature, where the atmosphere is more peaceful, which goes beyond the state of the everyday restless activities that the mind and body are subjected to.
In other words, meditation could be declared to be the synonym to mental maintenance. It is immensely necessary with respect to the fact that the mind has a primal need to take a break from the constant activity and for that it needs to steady down and subdue on some instances in order to function at the optimum level of its efficiency. Other than these aspects, another dimension of meditation deals with keeping the mind gain a sharper and clearer focus that is devoid of any kind of previous worries or concerns. As a result, the thought process becomes more efficient, perceptive and accurate. Also the speed of functioning increases, which has its own secondary benefits.

There are certain elements that are necessary for the entire process of meditation. These elements have to deal with the mind and the essential mechanics of its functioning. The first element (or more precisely the most important tool) of meditation is concentration. Having the power and intention to have a high level of concentration would not only enhance the thinking pattern but would also make the entire experience more convenient and hence more relaxing, pleasurable and intuitive. Under the umbrella of concentration, there are specific areas, which require the foremost attention when going through the process of meditation. These areas include the dimensions of sound, imagery (or visualization), breathing and physical sensations. These dimensions are not only the basic areas of concentration but are also those tools, which help a great deal in the carriage of the meditation experience. For instance, in the case of sound, mantra (manta means chant) yoga is absolutely helpful as it employs the use of a particular sound, phrase, prayer or affirmation as the major point of focus. When seeing from the traditional perspective, a mantra (chant) could only be received from a teacher who knows the nature of your mental processes. Relating to this example, transcendental meditation supports the practice of mantra yoga, which also encourages one to create own sound as a definite area of concentration.
Then comes the area of imagery and visualization. The very carriage of this dimension involves visualizing an kind of object (in most cases a tangible object) such as a flower, a field, the sea, the beauty of the sky, the peacefulness of a lake, a movie screen with no sound or picture or in some cases, a particular deity. The criterion for the selection of any object while employing the tool of imagery should be that the object should have the ability to give the mind a relaxed and quiet feeling. However special care should be taken about not getting carried away with the visualization of the object so as the concentration becomes intense enough to eliminate the essence of relaxation, which is the prime objective of meditation. Then of course, breathing is a prime tool of meditation, the pattern of which should be even and smooth instead of being irregular and haphazard. Last but not the least; physical sensations are also sometimes very effective tools of meditation, which help you to reach a definite area of focus and concentration.
On the whole, the smooth carriage of meditation could not be possible without the support of these tools, which make the entire experience of meditation a refreshing one.
